Wiring & Electrical

To begin the wiring phase of this project, separation of the stray wires that mate to the various parts of the citation's original harness were necessary. Pictured above is the Cadillac wiring harness, with all engine control wires nicely wrapped up, and all stray wires that will mate to the citation harness unwrapped and free. Circled on the left are the three ECM connectors, and circled on the right is the bulkhead connector which I will find a home for on the firewall, right next to the citation bulkhead connector. As you can see, I have labelled all the stray wires, using a spread sheet that was fashioned for me by Tyre Daniely to save time.

Pictured here is the fuse block and dash side portion of the citation bulkhead connector, circled in red, and the citation engine control harness, circled in yellow. The fuse block and dash side of the citation bulkhead connector will be used in this swap, and the citation engine control harness will be discarded and used as spare wire.

Pictured to the left and circled in red is the engine side of the citation bulkhead connector, and pictured to the right and circled in yellow is the factory square-shaped hole where the citation bulkhead connector mounts, directly behind the fuse block, sitting behind the glovebox compartment.

All citation wires that will be mated to the Cadillac harness get labelled. Inside the yellow circle is a connector that runs to the ALDL connector, as well as ignition power and battery power for the ECM. Circled in red is the main battery power wire that runs to inside the engine bay and pulls power from fusible links. The wires running from the ECM( aluminum rectangular box ) are the citation engine control harness.
This is the citation engine control harness, shown on the left exiting the inside of the citation cabin through the passenger's side wheel well, a very precarious and idiotic place to put it, but alas, this was GM's Modus Operandi(M.O.) back in 1981, hence the name "'81 factor" for this website. This is one of many things that GM designed while smoking crack that year. Pictured on the right is the now empty hole where the citation engine control harness used to be:)

This is the entire citation engine control harness removed. It was QUITE a bitch removing it, as you had to remove the entire passenger side wheel well curtain, and even then, the harness did not come out willingly. The harness runs under the wheel well, down by the front of the engine cradle, and up and around the passenger side strut tower-to-front engine bay support. needless to say again, it will not be used in the swap, instead the engine control harness for the Cadillac 4.9L engine will be used.

Thanks to the trusty dremel tool, I cut a square, notched hole for the placement of the Cadillac harness's bulkhead connector, and drilled a pilot hole for it's mounting screw. The location was made right next to the citation's bulkhead connector to keep things simple and avoid future confusion.

In order to avoid future hassles with rechecking faulty wiring, continuity tests were performed on every wire and electrical lead using a digital multi-meter.

The electrical ground distribution of the old citation harness was rather inadequate for my power needs, so a new ground dsirtribution point was created on the firewall, and all the ECM grounds and vehicle grounds will be relocated there.

Many of the power source wires and fusible links from the old citation bulkhead harness will still be used, because they were of adequate guage for their new uses in relation to the Cadillac ECM. Circled in yellow are a group of igntion( hot in run ) power wires. Circled in red are wires form the old bulkhead harness that will not be utilized anymore. I did however, make one goof when taking this picture. Anyone who is very familiar with '81 citation wiring should be able to pick up on it quickly. The large yellow wire that is on the right hand side of the red circle is actually the battery power wire for the distributor coming from the fusebox, and since the Cadillac 4.9L engine has an HEI distributor just like the old citation V6 does, this wire will be utilized for this swap, especially since they share the same distributor connector.

Pictured in the yellow circle are the connections that go to the cadillac and the citation alternators, respectively. According to the wiring schematics, they perform the same exact fucntion on both, so the cadillac connector will be mated to the citation wiring and the existing citation wiring will be used. Pictured in the red circle are the starter solenoid wire and the fusible links for the main battery power wires that run to the fuse block and power distribution points. They will be located in the stock position on the power terminal on the starter motor.
